Home electrical repairs you can do yourself

Home electrical repairs you can do yourself

Working with electricity always has a very daunting approach. While we're all aware of the safety tips homeowners should know while working with electricity, our first response is to call an electrician in New Jersey for even the smallest repair. Here are some electrical repairs you can try at home.

Replacing a switch

Whether you're changing your light switch to match your home's decor or simply replacing a faulty one, there's always the option to save your electrician and fix it yourself. The first step in doing this would be to understand the nomenclature of your light switch. There are various types of light switches that are necessary for their own way. Some of them are listed below:

  • Bipolar switch
  • Unipolar switch
  • Dimmer switch
  • Four-way switch
  • Three-way switch

The first step would be to remove the outer case with the screws still in place and pull the switch box. The number of wires behind that plastic switch can be intimidating as there may be a lot of important things you didn't know about electrical wires.

The two wires that are connected to a switch are the incoming hot wire and the return wire which carries electricity to the lamp. To modify the switch, these wires must be removed. Once you've found the switch of your choice, you can plug the wire into the respective slots in the switch body. Once this is done, all that remains is to screw the switch body and the switchgear plate back on. You now have a brand new switch for your home.

Editing a socket

There's always a shortage of outlets when you want to charge an electronic device. So, the first step to change it would be to remove the cover plate while keeping the screws. After pulling the socket case, there will be a number of wires according to the position of the socket. Will be placed:

At the end of the circuit

In between with one wire carrying the power and one carrying it to the next switch/socket. In the case of a splice set, one wire will carry the power and two or more will distribute it. Once these wires have been removed, it is important to make sure that the broken tab connecting the two terminals is broken. Now, connect the new outlet to the wires and plug it back into the electrical box. All that remains is to screw the switchgear plate back on.

Fix a light

Light fixtures today come in all forms and dimensions. However, whatever the look, the wiring is mostly the same. Before installing equipment on the circuit, the most important thing to keep in mind would be to check if the circuit is faulty. Fixing a light fixture is a little more difficult than fixing a light switch. It must be held in place until the wiring is complete. After removing the base of the fitting and the bulb, the wire nuts or electrical tapes that are on the wires must be removed. Then, hold the new fixture in place and connect the wires to the wire nuts.
